Music is a part of ever individuals' life. Whether you play an instrument, listen to the radio, or even listen to the sounds of nature, music is an everyday occurrence in our lives. For one Thibodaux family, music became their entire world.

Ted Hoffmann is part owner along with his son, Scott Hoffmann of Hofman Music Inc. located at 630 Jackson Street in Thibodaux. Hofman Music Inc. was Started in 1958 by Ted Hoffmann's brother and business partner before he joined the business in 1964. “ I was born and raised in Thibodaux.” In fact, I grew up right down the street from the shop. I joke and tell people I didn't get far in life”, said Hoffmann.

After graduating from Thibodaux High School, Hoffmann then attended Nicholls State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Science Education. I taught at the Thibodaux Upper Elementary for one year before joining the family business,” said Hoffmann. “Becoming a part of Hofman Music Inc. ended up curing me.”

Hoffmann's son, Scott, started working with him at age 13. “Scott was such a young boy when he started. I had him cleaning instruments and sweeping floors. I'm proud of what we've accomplished together.”

Hofman Music Inc., according to their website, “Strive[s] to provide quality instruments at affordable prices and a fun shopping experience for musicians and music enthusiasts. When you visit [their] store, you will be assisted by professionals with the experience to help you find the right instrument or equipment for you.”

After being in the business for 50 years, Hoffmann still enjoys the music and the challenges associated with instruments as well as sound systems and electronics. A typical day at the shop includes helping customers find what they are looking for, cleaning up and maintenance, working on sound systems, and doing whatever it takes to keep things running. “We are here to provide a good service for the community. You can't really get knowledge of instruments or electronics from the Internet, but at Hofman Music Inc., we pride ourselves in teaching the youth of the area how to play an instrument when they start to doubt themselves and give up.”

Hoffmann has many pastimes and hobbies. He is skilled in playing tuba as well as drums. He was president of the community band for 31 years and is still involved as an active member to this day. He is also one of the founding members of the Dixie Jazz Band, which focused on keeping the heritage of jazz music alive in the community. He played with this group for 25 years. Hoffmann also enjoys building and flying radio controlled model airplanes. “It's a wonderful hobby to have and I really like creating these planes from scratch. It's great accomplishing such a feat.” One of his model airplanes earned two trophies in competition in which he participated.

As for the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce, Hoffmann said that it is a key necessity for small business and our local community. “I was Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer at different points in my life with the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce. I also headed the annual Christmas parade one year. That was a feat in itself!”
